Polarize Story Idea And Character profile

I'm going to be telling the story of a teenage a boy in my music video to the music of Twenty One Pilots and their song 'Polarize'

Character profile

The idea of this story is that the boy currently is going through allot of problems in his life and he is coming out with all his inside emotions explaining how he has been a bad brother and son and is in denial. He's begging for help to 'Polarize' which means to see things in a different was so he can make up the wrong he has done in the past. In the pre-chorus, the song lists a few specific ways he’d like to improve his life: “I wanted to be a better brother, better son / Wanted to be a better adversary to the evil I have done.” He wishes he could have been better for his family and would have liked to have had the good in his life outweigh the evil. He wants desperately to be a good person.

Story Idea

The way in that I am going to show this in my video is by starting with him out alone with his thoughts and singing the song. He will then go home and get changed into clothes that make him feel more comfortable, for example a hat to try and hide himself from the world. He then leaves on his bike and starts to go to a place where he can be alone with his thoughts.

He then leaves his bike and travels the rest of the trip by foot, walking through the city alone and singing the song to himself with cutaways of him singing to the camera in various different locations e.g. under a bridge or in front of a wall with spray paint etc. just as long as it looks rebellious and not plain. He buys a cheap drink from a store and sits alone while drinking it. This is symbolising he doesn't have allot of money and he is very normal as allot of teens can relate to doing this when they were younger.

finally he  gets to the place he wanted to be and he appears to still be looking for something. He uses his hands to form a rectangle and looks through them.(I will edit this in after effects using masks) while looking through them he sees a different world and notices a drum kit and a mic stand. He then starts to perform with a drummer after he has 'Polarized' and can see things in a different way. The video finishes with a finale where they are performing and it gives the feel good factor and the viewer can see he's accomplished something and can maybe sort out his life from now on. He finally walks away and the screen fades to black at the end of the song.

Research into Existing characters in Music videos

Here are 3 Music Videos that all feature distinct character in each of them. The first is the song 'Stressed Out' by twenty-one pilots features 3 brothers and the main character is the singer. The second Is the song 'Oceans' By Seafret and the main character is a small girl. Finally the Third video is 'From Eden' By Hozier and the main character is Hozier himself

How important are characters in music videos?

I feel characters in a music video are extremely important. They help the viewer interoperate what the true meaning of the song is through their actions and feelings. This can be more effective in some videos more than others because the song may have stronger emotions and feelings tied into it. For example, The video 'Oceans' By Seafret has a small girl that is clearly troubled and is getting bullied by some older kids. This makes us feel sorry for her and when she uses her new powers we get the feel good factor and this goes hand in hand with the song as its when the chorus starts and it emphasises the songs effect.

Character Profiles

Song - 'Stressed Out' by Twenty One Pilots
Character - Tyler Joseph

Tyler Joseph is the actual lead singer in this video and he plays himself in the video. He is a man who is trying to re-live his childhood and goes round his friends house who Is also in the band. The fact that they are showing the emotions of pain and regret on their face emphasises the song and also because he is the actual person that sings the song makes it even more believable.

Song - 'Oceans' by Seafret
Character - Child Girl played by Maisie Williams

Maisie Williams is a well known actor. She is most recognisable from Game Of thrones and other films. The effect this has on the video is that any fans of hers will be interested in the video itself. It also makes people see the character in a different way as they see the girl as Maisie Williams not just some girl in a music video.

The actual character is shown to have had a bad day and is a bit of an outcast. We then see her take out a costume that's presumably from her childhood and she try's it on and leaves the house. She then lives her normal lonely life and buys a drink and sits on her own clearly fed up with life. Later on she meets a group of people who laughs at her and punches her. She then uses superpowers to get back at them but she didn't realise she could do this. She then runs in fear and goes home to her mom who has now came home from work and symbolises that everything is better now.

Song - 'From Eden'
Character - Hozier by Hozier

This video is about a man and wife who have a child and there lifestyle is loving on the road and committing robberies for money. The interesting part about this video is that the parents are very professional in the robberies but they take there child along with them and when they aren't committing crime they seem just like an ordinary family.

The character Hozier plays shows a very expressionless face throughout the video and this suggests he knows what he's doing is wrong but he has to do it to support his family. It also suggests that there is allot on his mind.

A different character is this video is the little boy he seems really happy and joyfull all the time and the mum seems to be the one his is mainly caring for him. This is why the video is so interesting as it looks like such an innocent child witnessing people being held at gunpoint for money and he has no idea what is going on.

Conclusion

In conclusion I feel that characters are such an important part in a music video as it lets the viewer get a more in depth view on what may have been going on in this persons life before the actual video. Also characters can be used to help portray the story and the message of the song because they allow the viewer to visually see emotions and expressions that are in the song but they are hard to display.

Genre in short film - Comedy

Is Comedy Suited for short Films?

I think that Comedy is suited for short films because the sense of Comedy can easily be created in a short period of time ranging from 2-10 minutes. This is because comedy can be delivered as a short and witty joke or it can all lead up to one punch line. Or in some cases it can be a whole load of funny actions and clips throughout the entirety if the film. I also think that comedy suits the short film genre well as the creator can achieve what they want in a short period of time and the joke/pun wont be overused as it hasn't got long enough for this to happen. So if its an effect like exploding heads or if its a catchphrase used over and over again then it wont be tiresome for the viewer.

On the other hand comedy may not be suited to short films though because in some cases comedy films prefer to have more of a storyline to it instead of pure jokes and puns. For example the film 'The Hangover' uses a storyline to aid it comedy by putting them in a location and story that provides them multiple opportunities for comedy. Also Comedy may not suit a short film because sometimes the comedy can seem forced and not funny at all. When someone has to write a comedy short they need to include the funny parts in a way that flows with the story if not viewers will not find it very amusing if it sticks out like a sore thumb. And this is a very challenging tasks for short film creators so its not always the best end result.

Analysis Of A Short Comedy Film (Time travel lover)

Matt and Hannah have been seeing each other for about 2 weeks and tonight is the night that they return to her apartment in order to have sex. A world of possibilities lie in front of their young relationship, but none of that is in their minds as they mutually undress one another – or at least it wasn't on their minds until Matt returned from 2 weeks in the future to warn his horny self of the road ahead.

There is a certain freshness to this short film. It is there at the start with the visually cool apartment, the good clean shots and look of the film and it continues with the plot development. The writing takes all stages of a relationship, the good and the bad, and compresses them into a short scene – keeping it light to be funny but still undeniably pretty smart. The script has plenty of chuckles and energy to it but it is the delivery that makes it work. Of course it helps that you have the writer in the lead role, so he knows the good material that he wrote, but this shouldn't take away from the performances.

His multiple roles gives him plenty to do but he does well to stay in character for all of them, making small changes that are comic and nicely done. In the middle of all of ths is the woman, who has a harder role with a constantly shifting reaction-mode (often I guess, reacting to air or stand-ins), but she is also funny with her facial reactions and delivery. The pacing of the film in the studio and in the editing is appropriate and effective, making it work well for what it does. It is a really enjoyable little scene, with a lot of energy but also control as it has good pace and timing throughout.

Practise Of A Music Video!

This is a practise of shooting a music video and here are the results. Some shots are just a black screen as the footage didn't match up as well as I thought it would. The song is While Where young and earlier on in the blog I made a post with the shots involved. Enjoy!

What does the song Polarize Mean?

Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, Twenty One Pilots’ two members, begin “Polarize” with the chorus. Tyler sings, “Help me polarize, help me polarize.” Polarization is a process that causes sunglasses to only accept lightwaves that are coming straight towards the glasses, reducing glare from other reflective surfaces. Wearers of polarized sunglasses are able to see exactly what they are looking at more clearly than usual.

Of course, polarization is also the process by which things are “polarized,” or separated into two distinct groups. (Think of the north and south poles or the two ends of a magnet.) Based on these two definitions, Tyler wants his life streamlined and sorted. As polarized sunglasses sort between the directions of light waves and a magnet has a north and a south end, Tyler wants himself to be clear and organized so that his decisions can be well made.

In the pre-chorus, Tyler lists a few specific ways he’d like to improve his life: “I wanted to be a better brother, better son / Wanted to be a better adversary to the evil I have done.” He wishes he could have been better for his family and would have liked to have had the good in his life outweigh the evil. He wants desperately to be a good person.

The Song I have chosen...

I have chosen to make a Music Video for the song 'Polarize' By Twenty One Pilots.

I have chose to use this song:
  •  as I feel I am able to portray the message of the song through visual images in imaginative and creative ways.
  • I also Like the instrumentation of the song as its not too crowded and it has a clear beat on the drums so I can follow this beat with my transitions and shots easily.
  • I also like how it has a Breakdown too as it will allow me to put a twist in the video and will allow me to change the mood of the video for that section.

Here is the song:
